How our reviewers frame this matchup
From the Checkout.com review
Stripe publishes its rates, offers self-serve signup, and serves businesses of all sizes, where Checkout.com negotiates every rate and reviewers report expectations of $10M+ in annual volume. Checkout.com still holds up for large global merchants who need direct local acquiring in 50+ countries and its authorization-optimization tooling.
Pick Stripe if you want published pricing and self-service setup without enterprise volume minimums
Who each one is for
Checkout.com
Ideal for
Large enterprises and high-growth technology companies processing $10M+ annually
Global ecommerce merchants needing multi-currency local acquiring in many countries
Businesses with sophisticated development teams who can take full advantage of the API
Merchants with significant international transaction volume
Not recommended for
Small and micro businesses — high volume minimums effectively bar entry
Merchants needing in-person POS or retail payment hardware
Businesses wanting transparent, published pricing from day one
Merchants without a technical team capable of API integration
Stripe
Ideal for
Online-focused businesses (ecommerce, SaaS, marketplaces) that have access to developer talent and need a scalable, customizable solution. Stripe is great for startups and tech-savvy companies selling globally, subscription-based services, and platforms that require multi-currency or multi-vendor payments. It’s also a strong fit for businesses that value transparent pricing and rich analytics.
Strengths and trade-offs
Checkout.com
✓Superior international acceptance, with direct local acquiring in 50+ countries and processing in 150+ currencies
✓Best-in-class API quality, consistently praised by developers, with a full sandbox environment
✓AI-driven authorization optimization (Intelligent Acceptance) and a serious fraud tooling suite
✓Free payment processing for registered charities in supported countries
✕No published pricing at all — every rate is a sales negotiation, and the published contract terms are equally undisclosed
✕Effectively inaccessible to small and mid-sized merchants, with reviewers reporting $10M+ annual volume expectations
✕Support is widely criticized outside dedicated enterprise accounts, including slow dispute and refund resolution
✕Reports of sudden merchant account terminations, with no native POS option and a steep learning curve on top
Stripe
Best-in-class developer experience: clean APIs, SDKs, and documentation that set the industry standard

Not recommended for
High-risk businesses (Stripe explicitly prohibits many high-risk categories). Also, very small or non-technical businesses that just need a simple point-of-sale or payment solution might prefer more out-of-box providers (like Square or PayPal). If you primarily operate a physical retail store or need in-person sales with minimal fuss, Stripe’s added complexity may not be worth it. Likewise, businesses unable to tolerate potential fund-holds or requiring a dedicated account representative might find Stripe’s model challenging.
✓
✓Transparent flat-rate pricing with no monthly, setup, PCI, or statement fees
✓Global reach with broad payment-method and multi-currency support
✓Deep feature set — subscriptions, invoicing, marketplace tools, virtual terminal — on one platform
✕First payout takes 7-14 days, and new or unusual accounts can face holds and verification friction
✕Flat-rate 2.9% + $0.30 gets expensive at volume compared with negotiated interchange-plus pricing
✕Complex for non-technical users — much of the value assumes you will build on the API
✕Prohibits many high-risk categories and is not available in every country
