How our reviewers frame this matchup
From the Helcim review
Stripe offers a deeper developer platform than Helcim, with industry-standard APIs, marketplace tools, and broad global multi-currency support. Helcim holds up on price — interchange-plus generally costs less at volume than Stripe's flat 2.9% + $0.30 — and on serving Canadian businesses with Interac and EFT support.
Pick Stripe if you are building a custom online platform, marketplace, or subscription product
Who each one is for
Helcim
Ideal for
High-volume retail or professional service businesses

Also excellent for Canadian businesses, professional services (medical, dental, legal), home services, eCommerce merchants
Developers building custom payment integrations.
Not recommended for
Very low-volume businesses or startups
High-risk industries

Strengths and trade-offs
Helcim
✓$0 monthly, setup, PCI, statement, and cancellation fees — you pay only per-transaction costs
✓Fully published interchange-plus rate table, so you can price your account before ever talking to sales
✓Automatic volume discounts that update from your three-month processing average, no renegotiation needed
✓No long-term contract and a $0 early termination fee — effectively zero lock-in
✕Next-morning card deposits require an RTP/FedNow-participating bank and batches under $25,000; ACH payouts still take 3-5 business days
✕Some merchants report funds held or accounts closed during risk and AML compliance reviews, with limited explanation
✕Does not accept high-risk merchants
✕No full countertop POS registers, so brick-and-mortar retailers needing a complete register setup with customer-facing displays must look elsewhere
Stripe
Best-in-class developer experience: clean APIs, SDKs, and documentation that set the industry standard

High-risk businesses (Stripe explicitly prohibits many high-risk categories). Also, very small or non-technical businesses that just need a simple point-of-sale or payment solution might prefer more out-of-box providers (like Square or PayPal). If you primarily operate a physical retail store or need in-person sales with minimal fuss, Stripe’s added complexity may not be worth it. Likewise, businesses unable to tolerate potential fund-holds or requiring a dedicated account representative might find Stripe’s model challenging.
✓
✓Transparent flat-rate pricing with no monthly, setup, PCI, or statement fees
✓Global reach with broad payment-method and multi-currency support
✓Deep feature set — subscriptions, invoicing, marketplace tools, virtual terminal — on one platform
✕First payout takes 7-14 days, and new or unusual accounts can face holds and verification friction
✕Flat-rate 2.9% + $0.30 gets expensive at volume compared with negotiated interchange-plus pricing
✕Complex for non-technical users — much of the value assumes you will build on the API
✕Prohibits many high-risk categories and is not available in every country
