Comparison · Updated October 15, 2026

One of Europe's largest independent payment service providers, serving more than 250,000 businesses from Amsterdam and authorised by the Dutch central bank as an electronic money institution. It publishes its full price list, which almost nobody at its scale does, and it is in the middle of absorbing GoCardless in a €1.05 billion deal. It processes for Europe and the UK only, and account freezes are the recurring complaint.

PAY. (pay.nl) is a Dutch payment service provider run by TinTel B.V., based in Enschede. It is licensed by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) as a payment institution, and it says it became a principal member of Visa and Mastercard in October 2021. Merchants sign their agreement directly with PAY., and customer funds pass through its own escrow foundation before payout. As of October 2026 it publishes a full price list in euros, excluding VAT. Professional costs €35 a month and Business €89 a month. On Professional, EU consumer cards online cost €0.15 + 1.50%, and iDEAL | Wero costs €0.19 per payment. A Pioneer option drops the monthly fee and contract but adds €0.05 and 0.25% to every transaction. The platform covers more than 50 payment methods, in-store terminals, SoftPOS and more than 90 integrations, and accepts companies from most EU and EEA countries. The paid plans are less flexible than the price list suggests: a one-year initial term that renews indefinitely, three months' notice to leave, a minimum-billing clause if volume drops, and published fines for compliance breaches.
Mollie and PAY. are both Dutch payment providers licensed by De Nederlandsche Bank, and both publish full price lists in euros. PAY. trades from pay.nl under the name Pay. (its legal entity is TinTel B.V.). It refreshed its logo in 2022 but kept the name, so Pay.nl and PAY. are the same company. The two price their services differently. Mollie has one online price list with no monthly fee: €0.32 per iDEAL | Wero payment and 1.80% + €0.25 for an EEA consumer card. PAY. charges a plan fee for lower rates. On its €35-a-month Professional plan, iDEAL | Wero costs €0.19, an EU consumer credit card €0.15 + 1.50%, a Dutch consumer debit card online €0.07 and Bancontact a flat €0.25. Its no-fee Pioneer option adds €0.05 and 0.25% to each Professional rate, though PAY.'s own sources disagree on whether Pioneer includes card payments. Both list their prices excluding VAT. Those plan rates come with conditions. Professional starts with a one-year term and then needs three months' notice to leave, and PAY.'s terms allow a minimum bill of 75% of your average fees if your volume drops. Mollie has no minimum term, though its user agreement still asks for two calendar months' notice. Mollie also offers round-the-clock chat, accepts businesses in the UK and Switzerland, and has a much stronger Trustpilot record. In shops, Mollie is cheaper on credit cards and PAY. charges less per Dutch debit card above a few euros. The Dutch Payments Association said in July 2026 that the next phase of the iDEAL-to-Wero migration would start in October 2026, with completion due by 31 December 2027 at the latest. Mollie charges the same for a domestic Dutch Wero payment as for iDEAL | Wero, and PAY. prices iDEAL payments it routes over Wero at its iDEAL rate. Payment Review grades Mollie B+ and PAY. B.
Mollie suits a Dutch or Belgian business that wants to start without a plan fee or minimum term, take payments from the UK or Switzerland, or have support at night and at weekends. It is also cheaper for in-store credit cards.
PAY. suits an established Benelux merchant with steady volume, especially one with many Bancontact or Dutch debit card payments or more than about 270 iDEAL payments a month, that is happy to sign a one-year Professional plan in return for lower rates and free payouts.
Neither provider is better for every business, and the grades (Mollie B+, PAY. B) reflect that. PAY. is cheaper per transaction on almost everything online. Its Bancontact price beats Mollie's even without a plan fee, and on the €35 Professional plan iDEAL | Wero, EU consumer credit cards and especially Dutch debit cards cost clearly less, with free payouts on any schedule. To get those rates, though, you sign a one-year plan with three months' notice, and the terms allow a minimum bill if volume drops. Its support is mainly office hours, and it does not accept UK or Swiss businesses. Mollie costs more per iDEAL and card payment but asks for no plan fee and no minimum term. It is cheaper for in-store credit cards, offers round-the-clock chat and has the much stronger Trustpilot record. A small or seasonal Dutch shop will usually find Mollie close in cost and easier to live with. A steady Benelux merchant with hundreds of iDEAL or Bancontact payments a month will save with PAY. if it is comfortable with the commitment.
| Feature | Mollie | PAY. |
|---|---|---|
| Plan fee | €0 | €0 Pioneer; €35/month Professional; €89/month Business |
| Mollie has one online price list and no monthly fee. PAY. sells plans. Pioneer has no monthly or setup fee but adds €0.05 per transaction and 0.25% of turnover to every Professional rate. Business is for organisations with annual revenue from €2.5 million, and Premium is priced on request. PAY.'s general terms (§9.12) say all fees exclude VAT, and Mollie's user agreement (Article 5.3.3) says the same of the rates on its website. Its own FAQ still gives an older €25 Professional fee, but the pricing page's €35 is current. Mollie volume pricing, including IC++, is available on request above €100,000 a month. PAY. offers IC++ above €1,000,000 in online card payments. | ||
| iDEAL | Wero | €0.32 | €0.19 Professional; €0.24 + 0.25% Pioneer |
| No winner, because it depends on volume. Professional saves €0.13 a payment but costs €35 a month, so on iDEAL alone it pays for itself from about 270 payments a month. Pioneer (€0.19 + €0.05 + 0.25%) is cheaper than Mollie only below €32 a payment. For a standalone domestic Wero payment, Mollie charges €0.32 in the Netherlands. PAY. lists an "Incentive iDEAL to Wero (Netherlands)" rate of €0.19 on Professional. Its separate rate for standalone Wero Single Immediate Payments is €0.19 under €50 but €0.14 + 0.55% above €50 and €2.50 + 0.10% above €1,000. PAY. said on 20 July 2026 that, for Wero payments that can also be made with iDEAL, a special rate would stop merchants paying more for Wero than for iDEAL. | ||
| EU/EEA consumer credit card (Visa or Mastercard) | 1.80% + €0.25 | €0.15 + 1.50% Professional; €0.20 + 1.75% Pioneer |
| Mollie's rate covers all consumer cards issued in the European Economic Area, debit or credit. PAY.'s is its rate for EU consumer credit cards (it prices online debit cards separately; see the next row). On a €50 payment Mollie charges €1.15, Professional €0.90 and Pioneer €1.08. No winner, for two reasons. First, Professional's saving (about €0.25 on a €50 payment) only covers its €35 fee from about 140 card payments a month. Second, PAY.'s own sources conflict on Pioneer: its documentation says the Pioneer package includes every payment method except direct debit and credit cards, and lists card payments (debit and credit) under Professional, Business and Corporate only, while its Pioneer page says Pioneer lets you offer all the popular payment methods. Confirm with PAY. that cards are enabled on Pioneer. | ||
| Dutch consumer debit card (Visa or Mastercard), online | 1.80% + €0.25 | €0.07 Professional; €0.12 + 0.25% Pioneer |
| PAY.'s Dutch price list prices online consumer debit cards separately from credit cards: €0.07 for Dutch cards, €0.12 for Belgian and €0.15 elsewhere in the EU on Professional (its English price page does not show these rows). Mollie does not split debit from credit and charges its EEA consumer card rate. On a €50 payment that is €1.15 at Mollie against €0.07 on Professional, so Professional's €35 fee is covered from about 33 such payments a month. No winner, because the saving needs the paid plan, and the Pioneer figure depends on whether PAY. enables cards on Pioneer (its documentation says it does not; its Pioneer page says Pioneer offers all the popular payment methods). | ||
| Business cards and cards from outside the EU/EEA | 2.90% + €0.25 EEA commercial; 3.25% + €0.25 non-EEA | €0.15 + 2.80% Professional |
| PAY. puts business cards and non-EU cards in one tier, while Mollie splits them. On Professional, PAY. is cheaper per transaction for both. On Pioneer, if cards are enabled there, PAY.'s rate becomes €0.20 + 3.05%, which is cheaper than Mollie's non-EEA rate but dearer than its commercial-card rate above about €33. No winner, because of the plan fee. For currency conversion, PAY.'s terms add €0.03 + 2.75% when the buyer pays in a currency other than your settlement currency. Mollie charges 1% on payouts in a currency other than your primary balance. | ||
| American Express | 2.90% + €0.25 | €0.25 + 2.65% Professional |
| On Professional, PAY. is cheaper by €0.13 on a €50 payment. On Pioneer (€0.30 + 2.90%, if cards are enabled there), PAY. is €0.05 dearer than Mollie at every amount. No winner. | ||
| Bancontact | 1.40% + €0.25 | €0.25 Professional; €0.30 + 0.25% Pioneer Winner |
| On a €50 payment: Mollie €0.95, PAY. Professional €0.25, PAY. Pioneer €0.43. Even PAY.'s no-fee Pioneer rate beats Mollie on any payment above €4.35, so PAY. wins without its plan fee being needed. | ||
| SEPA Direct Debit | €0.35 | €0.35 Professional |
| The same price. PAY. lists this as "Collection", charges €0.45 for a reversal, and its documentation says direct debit needs at least the Professional plan. Mollie charges €10 for a SEPA Direct Debit chargeback. | ||
| Klarna, Netherlands and Belgium | 2.99% + €0.45 | €0.45 + 2.95% Professional |
| Near parity. PAY.'s figure is for Klarna's pay later in 30 days option; Mollie lists a single Klarna rate for the Netherlands and Belgium. The difference is €0.02 on a €50 order. | ||
| Worked example: €10,000 a month (300 iDEAL at €30, 25 EU credit cards at €40) | €120.25 | €110.75 Professional (incl. €35 fee); €117.00 Pioneer |
| Mollie: 300 × €0.32 = €96, plus cards 1.80% × €1,000 + 25 × €0.25 = €24.25. PAY. Professional: 300 × €0.19 = €57, plus cards 1.50% × €1,000 + 25 × €0.15 = €18.75, plus the €35 fee. Pioneer: €75.75 at Professional rates, plus 325 × €0.05 and 0.25% × €10,000. Both providers' rates exclude VAT, and the Pioneer figure assumes cards are enabled on Pioneer. If the 25 cards were Dutch debit cards, PAY. Professional would charge €1.75 for them instead of €18.75 (€93.75 in total), while Mollie's total would not change. At this size the difference is under €10 a month, so no winner. PAY.'s advantage grows with volume, but only Professional brings the one-year term. | ||
Recommendations based on your business type

Below about 270 iDEAL payments a month, PAY.'s €35 Professional fee costs more than it saves on iDEAL, and Pioneer is cheaper than Mollie only on payments under €32. Mollie needs no plan or minimum term and has round-the-clock chat, which a small shop will notice more than a few euros.

At €0.19 against €0.32, PAY. Professional saves €0.13 on every iDEAL | Wero payment about €0.25 on each €50 EU credit card payment and more than €1 on each €50 Dutch debit card payment. That outweighs the €35 fee once volume is steady, and PAY.'s payouts are free on any schedule. Accept the one-year term and three months' notice first, and check the 75% minimum-billing clause if you trade seasonally.

PAY. charges €0.25 flat for Bancontact on Professional, and €0.30 + 0.25% even on its no-fee Pioneer option, against Mollie's 1.40% + €0.25. On a €50 payment that is €0.25 or €0.43 against €0.95.

Mollie is cheaper on in-store EU consumer credit cards on both tiers (1.80% against €0.15 + 2.00% with no plan fee, if PAY. enables credit cards on Pioneer; €0.10 + 1.50% against €0.10 + 1.75% on the paid plans), and it publishes its terminal prices (€95 to €350). A debit-heavy shop should compare more closely, because PAY. Professional's flat €0.07 per Dutch debit card is cheaper above €5.

PAY. does not list the UK or Switzerland among the countries it accepts merchants from. Mollie accepts businesses in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK.
