Stripe is a leading payment processor known for its developer-friendly API, transparent pricing, and comprehensive suite of payment solutions for businesses of all sizes.

One of Europe's largest independent payment service providers, serving more than 250,000 businesses from Amsterdam and authorised by the Dutch central bank as an electronic money institution. It publishes its full price list, which almost nobody at its scale does, and it is in the middle of absorbing GoCardless in a €1.05 billion deal. It processes for Europe and the UK only, and account freezes are the recurring complaint.
This is a European comparison, because it has to be: Mollie processes for the EEA and the UK only, so the Stripe figures here are from its Dutch price list, not the US one. On that basis Stripe is cheaper on the row that matters most - 1.5% + €0.25 for a standard EEA card against Mollie's 1.80% + €0.25 - and cheaper again on iDEAL, Klarna and in-person EEA cards. Neither charges a monthly fee, a setup fee or an exit fee on online payments. What Mollie sells instead is the experience around the rate: chat support 24/7 and a phone line until midnight CET, a payout schedule you set yourself, a 4.4 Trustpilot score across 12,840 reviews against Stripe's 1.6 across 17,478, and roughly thirty European payment methods under one contract. Stripe's platform is broader - 100+ payment methods, Terminal, Billing, Connect, and global reach when you outgrow Europe - and it is the one to build on. Payment Review grades Stripe A and Mollie B+.
Stripe suits a business with developers, ambitions beyond Europe, or a need for subscriptions, marketplace payouts or a unified in-person and online stack - and any merchant for whom the lower EEA card rate is decisive.
Mollie suits a European merchant selling mainly to European customers who wants local payment methods first, a person to call, a payout schedule of their own choosing, and a provider whose customers rate it well.

On its European price list Stripe undercuts Mollie on the standard EEA card rate, on iDEAL and on Klarna, matches it on monthly and exit fees, and offers a far broader platform - 100+ payment methods, Terminal, Billing and Connect - with a path outside Europe that Mollie does not have. That is why Stripe carries the A grade. Mollie's case is real, though, and it is not about price: its customers rate it 4.4 where Stripe's rate it 1.6, it answers the phone, and it lets you choose your own payout day. A European merchant who has been burned by an unreachable processor, or who sells mainly through local methods to local customers, can reasonably pick Mollie and pay a fraction of a percent more for it.
| Feature | Stripe | Mollie |
|---|---|---|
| Standard EEA consumer card | 1.5% + €0.25 Winner | 1.80% + €0.25 |
| Stripe's rate is for 'standard European Economic Area cards'; Mollie's is for EEA-issued Visa and Mastercard consumer cards. Both are the headline online rate for a domestic European sale. | ||
| Premium or commercial EEA card | 2.8% + €0.25 Winner | 2.90% + €0.25 |
| Stripe calls these 'premium' EEA cards and Mollie 'commercial' cards. The categories overlap heavily but are not defined identically, so treat this row as near-parity rather than a decisive gap. | ||
| Card issued outside the EEA | 3.15% + €0.25 Winner | 3.25% + €0.25 |
| Stripe adds 2% when currency conversion is required; Mollie charges conversion at 1% of the payout amount instead (see Payouts). A UK card on Stripe is a separate 2.5% + €0.25 tier. | ||
| American Express | Not disclosed on the pricing page | 2.90% + €0.25 |
| Stripe's Dutch price list does not name American Express or print a rate for it; Mollie lists it explicitly. No winner marked because one side is unknown. | ||
| iDEAL | €0.29 Winner | €0.32 |
| Klarna | From 2.99% + €0.35 Winner | 2.99% + €0.45 (Netherlands and Belgium) |
| SEPA Direct Debit | Not disclosed on the pricing page | €0.35 flat |
| Stripe supports SEPA Direct Debit but its Dutch pricing page does not print the rate; Mollie's is a published flat fee. No winner marked because one side is unknown. | ||
| Number of payment methods | 100+ (global) Winner | Around thirty, European |
| Different products. Stripe's count spans every market it operates in; Mollie's list is deliberately European - iDEAL, Wero, Bancontact, Klarna, BLIK, TWINT, Przelewy24, Vipps, MobilePay - and for a merchant selling only in Europe the practical coverage is similar. | ||
Recommendations based on your business type
Stripe Billing, a lower standard EEA card rate and global reach when the customer base spreads outside Europe. Mollie offers recurring payments but stops at the EEA and UK border.
Stripe is cheaper on iDEAL (€0.29 against €0.32) and Klarna (from 2.99% + €0.35 against 2.99% + €0.45), and its 3-business-day rolling payout is predictable. Mollie's plug-ins and local onboarding are the reason many such shops choose it anyway - but on the numbers, Stripe wins this one.

A phone line open until midnight CET, chat around the clock, and a 4.4 Trustpilot score from nearly 13,000 reviews. Stripe's 1.6 is dominated by exactly this complaint.

Mollie's pay-as-you-go terminal rate for domestic consumer cards is 1.20% with no per-transaction cents, against Stripe Terminal's 1.4% + €0.10 - and the Pro plan takes it to 0.85% + €0.10 for €20 a month. A shop with many foreign EEA cards should re-run the sums, because Mollie's 'other consumer card' rate is 1.80%.
Stripe Connect is the established product for split payments and seller onboarding, with the deepest documentation. Mollie offers a marketplaces product too; for a platform whose sellers are all in Europe it is worth a look, but Connect is the safer default.
Mollie is not a route to US acquiring at all. Stripe is.
