Toast POS is the leading all-in-one cloud-based restaurant management platform, purpose-built for the food service industry with deep features for ordering, payments, payroll, and analytics, but comes with restrictive multi-year contracts, mandatory payment processor lock-in, and a history of transparency controversies.

The retail and restaurant half of the old NCR. NCR Corporation — founded in 1884 as the National Cash Register Company — renamed itself NCR Voyix in October 2023 when it spun off its ATM business as NCR Atleos, and what remains is a unified commerce platform: Aloha and Counterpoint point of sale, self-checkout, and Voyix Pay processing sold alongside them. The scale is real. NCR Voyix reported 80,000 platform sites and more than 8,500 payment sites at the end of 2025, $1.7 billion of annual recurring revenue, and full-year Software and Services revenue of $1,986 million. The problem is the paper you sign. The published US merchant agreement sets a 36-month initial term that auto-renews for 12-month periods unless you give 60 days' notice, makes cancellation during the term immediately payable for every remaining month, and reserves an annual price increase of CPI plus 5% — with a contractual floor of 5% — that applies during the initial term as well as after it. Buy the platform if the platform is what you need, and negotiate the term before you sign anything.
Toast and NCR Voyix both sell a restaurant point of sale with payment processing attached, but they sell it in different ways. Toast publishes its standard prices for a new single-location restaurant. As of October 2026, its online Starter Kit costs $69 a month for the software, plus 2.49% + 15 cents per in-person Visa, Mastercard or Discover payment and about $1,153 for the basic hardware. A pay-as-you-go option drops the monthly fee and hardware cost to $0 and charges 3.09% + 15 cents instead. Starter Kit orders carry a two-year agreement. NCR Voyix, the company that sells Aloha, publishes no prices: software, hardware and processing are all quoted. What it does publish is its US merchant agreement for Aloha Cloud. That agreement sets a 36-month term that renews itself for 12 months at a time, makes every remaining month payable if you cancel early, and allows a price rise of at least 5% each year, even during the first term. Toast publishes its payout schedule and has the better BBB record. Aloha has the much better Trustpilot score and, unlike Toast for most restaurants, can let you use a processor other than its own, though only one NCR Voyix has certified or approved. Payment Review grades Toast B and NCR Voyix B-.
Toast suits most independent and small-group US restaurants that want to know the price before they talk to sales. It also suits restaurants that want point of sale, online ordering, delivery integrations, marketing and payroll from one vendor on a two-year term, and owners who value next-day deposits and 24/7 phone support. Accept that you must use Toast's own processing, and that Toast can change processing rates on 30 days' notice. If it does, you can leave without the early termination fee.
NCR Voyix suits multi-unit and enterprise restaurant groups already running Aloha, or groups that need its depth in complex menus, multiple revenue centres and franchise rollouts. They should have the buying power to negotiate the term, the yearly price rise and the processing rate. It also suits operators who want a processor other than the vendor's own and can get NCR Voyix's approval for it. Get the funding timetable, every rate and the exit terms in writing before you sign.

For most US restaurants, Toast is the better choice, in line with the site's grades (Toast B, NCR Voyix B-). You can see Toast's price before you call sales: $69 a month and 2.49% + 15 cents per in-person card payment on its standard plan, or $0 a month on pay-as-you-go. A Starter Kit agreement runs two years rather than three. Software fees cannot rise during that first term, and if Toast raises your card rates you can leave without the early termination fee. NCR Voyix's Aloha Cloud agreement runs 36 months, makes every remaining month payable if you cancel, and allows a yearly rise of at least 5%. NCR Voyix wins on Trustpilot and on processor choice, although a third-party processor needs its approval and can cost extra. It remains the right shortlist pick for multi-unit groups already on Aloha, or groups that need its enterprise depth and can negotiate the contract.

| Starter hardware | $1,153 countertop kit, or $0 on pay-as-you-go | Not disclosed |

Extra terminals are listed separately, for example a 14-inch Toast Flex at $749 plus $50 a month and a Toast Go 3 handheld at $599 plus $50 a month. NCR Voyix publishes no hardware prices. Under an agreement announced on 6 August 2024, Ennoconn designs, makes and ships NCR Voyix's point-of-sale hardware (FY2025 10-K), and since 1 April 2026 NCR Voyix has sold it as Ennoconn's agent (Q1 2026 results release). Its agreement allows a deposit before hardware ships and charges list price for subscribed hardware not returned. | ||
Recommendations based on your business type
Toast publishes the price a new single-location restaurant pays, $69 a month plus 2.49% + 15 cents in person, and its Starter Kit agreement is two years. Aloha prices are quoted only, and its standard agreement runs 36 months with every remaining month payable if you leave.
Toast's pay-as-you-go plan puts the Starter Kit hardware and Basic software at $0 upfront and $0 a month, for 3.09% + 15 cents per card payment. Remember that leaving early still costs $150 for each month left in the term. NCR Voyix publishes no comparable plan.

Staying on Aloha avoids retraining staff and migrating complex menus across sites. NCR Voyix's newer Aloha Next is cloud-based or hybrid-cloud, and its enterprise rollouts include Pizza Ranch's 200-plus restaurants. Use your size to negotiate the 36-month term, the yearly price rise and the processing rate.

Toast requires its own payments for all but select enterprise customers. NCR Voyix leaves processing to a separate agreement and can route Aloha payments to a third-party processor it has certified or approved in writing, usually for an extra fee, and some discounts depend on taking Voyix Pay. Get the approval and fees in writing before you sign.
Toast publishes its schedule: next business day if you batch by 9:30 p.m. ET, two business days otherwise, with instant deposit available for 1.75%. NCR Voyix publishes no deposit timetable.
