Comparison · Updated October 31, 2026

Transbank is Chile's largest card acquirer, which traces its origins to a company a group of banks set up in 1989 and is still owned by banks. Its biggest shareholders are Banco de Chile, Banco Santander-Chile and Scotiabank Chile. It signs merchants directly under its own Visa, Mastercard and American Express acquiring licences, and it sells card terminals, the Webpay online checkout, Oneclick stored-card payments and free payment links. Its tariff page lists 2.29% on credit cards and 1.49% on debit and prepaid cards, plus IVA, for merchants that join from 1 September 2026. Two help-centre articles still quoted 2.35% and 1.75% in October 2026, so confirm the rate in writing. Existing merchants are priced differently. Debit sales made before 2pm on a business day are paid the next business day, and credit sales a day later. The contract has no fixed term and either side can end it on 30 days' notice. For most of its life Transbank's pricing was regulated. Its acquiring margin was freed in January 2026, after the Supreme Court upheld a 2025 competition-tribunal ruling and the competition authority confirmed Transbank's share of acquirer processing, by number of transactions, had been below 50% for six months. Its record includes a 2024 fine from the financial regulator and several lawsuits from large merchants and payment companies over fee increases.

Mercado Pago is the payments and fintech arm of Mercado Libre, the Latin American e-commerce group incorporated in Delaware in October 1999 and headquartered in Montevideo, Uruguay. It launched in Argentina in November 2003 and in Brazil and Mexico in January 2004, initially to let marketplace buyers and sellers pay each other safely, and is now one of the region's largest fintechs: in the second quarter of 2026 Mercado Libre reported 88 million monthly active Mercado Pago users, US$101 billion in total payment volume, a credit portfolio above US$16 billion and 1.4 million active card devices in Mexico alone. It is a division of a Nasdaq-listed company, not a separately funded startup. In Mexico the merchant contracts with MP Agregador, S. de R.L. de C.V., a payment aggregator supervised by the CNBV and Banco de México, and sales land in a Mercado Pago Wallet account run by a separate electronic payment funds institution. As of September 2026 Point card readers and Tap to Pay on Android and iPhone cost 3.50% + IVA per debit or credit sale with the money available instantly, and the Point terminals page advertises lower rates by monthly card volume — 3.20% + IVA from MX$10,000 and 2.99% + IVA above MX$100,000 — readers sell from MX$89 on promotion, QR payments run from 0.99% to 2.99%, and payment links and online checkout cost 3.49% + MX$4 for instant access, falling to 2.95% + MX$4 if the merchant waits 30 days. There is no monthly fee or fixed term. The weak points are in the terms: Mercado Pago may hold funds indefinitely on suspicion of fraud, debit chargebacks from future sales, and change the terms on ten days' notice.
We compare the two for a business established in Chile taking card payments in Chilean pesos, online and in store, using each provider's own Chilean pricing pages and terms as of October 2026. For Transbank that is the published tariff for merchants that join from 1 September 2026: 2.29% on credit cards and 1.49% on debit and prepaid cards, the same online through Webpay Plus and in store, for domestic and foreign cards. For Mercado Pago it is mercadopago.cl, not the Mexican figures in the site's Mercado Pago review: Checkout and payment links cost 3.19% for the money at once or 2.89% if you wait 10 days, whatever the payment method, and Point terminal rates depend on the device and your monthly card volume. Both quote fees before Chile's 19% IVA, charged on the fee, so the listed rates compare directly; our worked examples add the IVA. Transbank is cheaper per sale on every standard like-for-like rate we found, online and in store; only Mercado Pago's 90-day Link de pago promotion for new users dips below Transbank's credit rate. That holds even against Mercado Pago's cheaper 10-day rates, which leave the money in your Mercado Pago account longer than Transbank takes to pay your bank. Mercado Pago's advantages are elsewhere: no terminal rental (you buy the reader), money available in your Mercado Pago account the moment a sale clears at its instant rates, bank transfer and wallet balance at checkout, and a contract you can leave without notice. Transbank pays straight to any Chilean bank account, debit sales the next business day and credit sales a day later, at no charge. Mercado Pago pays into your Mercado Pago account, and you then transfer to a bank account in your name for free. Transbank, which traces its origins to a company Chilean banks set up in 1989, is bank-owned and supervised by the financial regulator (CMF). In Chile, Mercado Pago's card processing is provided by Mercado Pago Operadora S.A., a payment-card operator on the CMF's register since November 2021. Transbank's own help centre still lists older new-merchant rates of 2.35% and 1.75%, so get the rate in writing. Its discounted first-year terminal rentals and CLP 19,990 Mobile POS price were October 2026 promotions for new merchants affiliating by 31 October 2026, so check what applies when you sign.
Transbank suits a Chilean business that wants the lowest published card rate, 2.29% on credit and 1.49% on debit plus IVA for new merchants, online through Webpay Plus and in store, with deposits to any Chilean bank the next business day for debit. It is the better buy if you can use the Mobile POS reader or Webpay Plus, or keep rental costs in check, and do not need bank transfer at checkout.
Mercado Pago suits a seller who wants to start without renting anything, have the money in a Mercado Pago account the moment the sale clears, take bank transfer and Mercado Pago balance online, or leave without notice. Its rates are higher, 3.19% + IVA online for instant access and 1.59% to 2.95% + IVA on debit in store, falling with volume only on the Point Smart 2.
On price per sale Transbank wins. For new merchants its 2.29% on credit and 1.49% on debit, plus IVA, are below Mercado Pago's 3.19% (instant) and 2.89% (10-day) online rates and below every published Point rate in store, and it deposits to any Chilean bank account, debit sales the next business day, at no charge. Mercado Pago wins on how you start and leave. You buy its readers outright instead of renting, money is available in your Mercado Pago account the moment a sale clears on its instant rates, Checkout Pro takes bank transfer and wallet balance, and you can end the contract at any time. Rental is where Transbank's lead can disappear: on a rented Smart POS the full rent is 0.64 UF + IVA a month, discounted for the first year only under an October 2026 new-merchant promotion, which at CLP 1.5 million a month in store makes a Point Smart 2 cheaper once the full rent applies. A business that can use Transbank's Mobile POS or Webpay Plus, and wants the lowest rate and bank deposits, will usually pay less with Transbank. A small or new seller that wants no rental, instant access to funds or non-card payment methods online may prefer Mercado Pago despite the higher rate. Confirm Transbank's rate and any terminal promotion in writing, since its help centre still lists older figures.
| Feature | Transbank | Mercado Pago |
|---|---|---|
| Credit cards | 2.29% + IVA Winner | 3.19% + IVA (instant); 2.89% + IVA (10 days) |
| Transbank's tariff page lists 2.29% per credit-card transaction for domestic and foreign cards on every channel, stated as valid from 1 September 2026 for newly affiliated merchants and excluding IVA. Its help-centre articles on Webpay and on what it costs to sell with Transbank still give 2.35% for new merchants; we use the dated tariff page and suggest getting the rate in writing. A minimum commission of 0.003515 UF (about CLP 145 on 31 October 2026) applies when the percentage comes to less, which happens below roughly CLP 6,300. Mercado Pago's Chilean Checkout and Link de pago pages charge one rate for every payment method, set by when you want the money: 3.19% + IVA at once or 2.89% + IVA at 10 days. Both are above Transbank's rate. The instant rate is the closer match on speed, since Transbank pays debit sales to your bank the next business day and credit sales the day after, while the 10-day rate keeps the money in your Mercado Pago account for longer; Transbank is cheaper either way. Mercado Pago invites merchants selling more than CLP 5 million a month online to ask for a special rate. Merchants that joined Transbank earlier are priced differently, and its help centre says the commission depends on card type, brand, channel and business category. | ||
| Debit and prepaid cards | 1.49% + IVA Winner | 3.19% + IVA (instant); 2.89% + IVA (10 days) |
| Transbank's tariff page lists 1.49% on debit and prepaid cards for new merchants from 1 September 2026, with a minimum of 0.002260 UF (about CLP 93). Its help centre still shows 1.75%. Mercado Pago does not price debit separately online: the same 3.19% or 2.89% applies to credit, debit, prepaid and Mercado Pago balance. | ||
| New-user promotions | No rate promotion | Checkout 2.59% / 2.29% + IVA; Link de pago 2.23% |
| Mercado Pago's Checkout page advertises a new-user promotion of 2.59% + IVA for instant access and 2.29% + IVA at 10 days, against the general 3.19% and 2.89%; it does not state how long the promotion lasts. Its Link de pago page advertises 2.23% for instant access to new Link de pago users, capped at CLP 3,000,000 and 90 days, and does not say on that line whether IVA is added. The Checkout promotion is at or above Transbank's 2.29% credit rate; the Link de pago promotion is slightly below it for credit cards while it lasts. Both are well above Transbank's 1.49% debit rate. Transbank's new-merchant tariff is not advertised as time-limited; its October 2026 promotions discounted terminal rentals and the Mobile POS price, not the commission. | ||
| Monthly or setup fee | None (self-integrated Webpay Plus) | None |
| Transbank's Webpay Plus page says you pay no fixed monthly fees, only a commission per sale. You can integrate it yourself or pay Transbank a one-off fee to integrate it; Transbank must validate your integration before you go live. Mercado Pago's Checkout and Link de pago pages say there are no fixed costs and the commission is only charged once a payment is credited. | ||
Recommendations based on your business type

Webpay Plus charges new merchants 2.29% on credit and 1.49% on debit plus IVA with no monthly fee, against 3.19% + IVA on Mercado Pago's Checkout for instant access or 2.89% at 10 days. A CLP 100,000 credit sale costs CLP 2,725 including IVA on Transbank and CLP 3,796 on Mercado Pago at the instant rate. Transbank has official WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Magento and OpenCart plugins.

Transbank's Mobile POS cost CLP 19,990 to buy on its October 2026 new-merchant promotion and charges the same 1.49% / 2.29% + IVA, while Mercado Pago's Point Mini costs CLP 12,900 on promotion but charges 2.95% + IVA at any volume. At CLP 1.5 million a month split between debit and credit, that is about CLP 33,737 a month on Transbank against CLP 52,658 on the Point Mini, including IVA and excluding the readers.
Both. Transbank's Smart POS rents for 0.64 UF + IVA a month, discounted to CLP 6,990 + IVA for the first year for new merchants that affiliated in October 2026; Mercado Pago's Point Smart 2 is CLP 49,900 to buy with no rent but higher rates. At CLP 1.5 million a month in store, Transbank is cheaper over a first year on the promotional rent and Mercado Pago is cheaper once the full rent applies. Work it through at your own volume and card mix, check which promotion is running when you sign, and compare the Pocket POS if you do not need printed vouchers.

Mercado Pago's Checkout Pro and Link de pago take bank transfer and Mercado Pago account balance as well as cards, at one rate for all methods, and new Link de pago users get a promotional 2.23% for up to 90 days and CLP 3 million. Webpay Plus takes cards only.

Mercado Pago credits sales to your Mercado Pago account at once on its instant rates and lets you transfer to your own bank account for free, credited instantly up to CLP 5 million for individuals or CLP 10 million for companies. Transbank pays debit sales the next business day and credit sales a day later; same-day payouts through Anticipo de Abonos cost a referential 0.4% + IVA on top.
