Best payment processors for restaurants in 2026

For most independent restaurants, Square is the best all-round choice in 2026 — 2.6% + $0.15 card-present, no monthly fee and month-to-month terms. If you process above roughly $50,000 a month, Host Merchant Services publishes interchange + 0.20% + $0.09 for restaurants, the lowest published restaurant margin we have found, and Helcim is close behind at interchange + 0.40% + $0.08 with no contract. Toast is the strongest restaurant platform but locks you into two years with a termination fee of $150 per remaining month.
Each provider’s own published figures as of 25 August 2026. Your quoted rate depends on underwriting.
Best for most independent restaurants · POS system · Month-to-month
Square is the default for a reason. Flat 2.6% + $0.15 at the table, no monthly fee on the entry tier, genuinely good software, and month-to-month terms so a bad fit costs you nothing to exit. Hardware is cheap and available same-day from a shop.
For a single-site restaurant under roughly $50,000 a month, the arithmetic almost never beats it once you account for software you would otherwise pay for separately.
The catch: You outgrow it. Above about $50K a month a flat 2.6% is meaningfully more expensive than interchange-plus, and Square will not negotiate at that level the way an ISO will. It also does not board high-risk, which matters if you add a delivery or alcohol-shipping line.
Cheapest published restaurant rate · Delaware ISO · Month-to-month
Host Merchant Services publishes a restaurant-specific margin of interchange + 0.20% + $0.09 — the lowest published restaurant figure we have found anywhere, and it publishes it rather than quoting it. On month-to-month terms with no long-term contract.
At $150,000 a month that margin is roughly $3,600 a year against Square’s flat 2.6%, before interchange, which you pay either way.
The catch: $14.99 a month plus another $14.99 for a gateway where one is needed, plus $0.75 per batch. Below about $30K a month those fixed costs outweigh the margin saving. It is also an ISO rather than a restaurant platform — you bring your own POS.

Best interchange-plus with no contract · Processor · No contract
Helcim charges no monthly fee at all and applies automatic volume discounts as you grow, so the margin falls without renegotiation. Interchange + 0.40% + $0.08 card-present is among the lowest published anywhere, and there is no contract and no termination fee.
The $15 chargeback fee is refunded if you win the dispute — rare, and worth more than it sounds in a category where friendly fraud is routine.
The catch: Helcim itself says very low-volume businesses and startups are not the target, and the volume discounts only bite above about $50K a month. The restaurant-specific feature set is thinner than a dedicated platform — no coursing, no deep KDS integration.
Best full restaurant platform · Restaurant platform · 2-year term
Toast is the most complete restaurant platform here and the only one built exclusively for restaurants — coursing, kitchen display, online ordering, handhelds and payroll in one system. At 2.49% + $0.15 card-present it is also the cheapest flat rate in this guide.
For a full-service operation with a busy kitchen, the software is the reason to choose it, not the rate.
The catch: The contract. Two years minimum on most plans, some promotional offers requiring three, and an early-termination fee of $150 for each remaining month. Leaving 18 months into a 24-month term is roughly $2,700 in software fees alone, plus hardware. Online orders are also 3.50% + $0.15, which is expensive if delivery is a large share of covers.

Best if you need hardware bundled · POS system · Hardware included
SpotOn’s All-In plan carries no per-station monthly fee and includes the POS hardware, which removes the upfront cost that stops a lot of operators switching. Card-present on Essentials or Preferred is 2.45% + $0.15, the lowest flat card-present figure in this guide.
The catch: The All-In plan runs a two-year minimum term with processing minimums, and its card-present rate rises to 2.79% + $0.20 — so the free hardware is financed through the rate. Cancellation terms are not published, and SpotOn applied a mid-2026 rate increase to existing merchants, which is a reasonable thing to ask about before signing.
Best for cafes and counter service · POS system · Reseller-dependent
Clover’s hardware range is the best here for counter service and coffee shops, and plans start around $14.95 a month. The app marketplace covers most operational gaps.
It is widely resold, so you can often negotiate.
The catch: That same reselling is the problem. Rates, chargeback fees and termination terms are set by whichever reseller signs you, not by Clover, so two identical cafes can be on wildly different deals. Get every figure in writing and identify who actually holds the contract, because Clover will not help you exit it.
These are not prohibitions — restaurants are low-risk and every processor wants the business. They are mismatches, and worth naming because operators reach for them anyway.
Flat rates look simple and interchange-plus looks cheap, and neither headline is your cost. Add typical card-present interchange of about 1.8% to Host Merchant’s 0.20% margin and you are near 2.0% all-in, against Square’s flat 2.6%. On $150,000 a month that is roughly $10,800 a year. Below about $30,000 a month the fixed monthly fees flip the answer back the other way.
This is where restaurants get hurt. Toast charges $150 per remaining month to leave, so a 24-month contract abandoned at month six costs roughly $2,700 in software fees plus hardware. SpotOn’s All-In plan runs a two-year minimum without publishing its cancellation terms. Square, Helcim and Host Merchant Services are all month-to-month. If you are not certain about a platform, that flexibility is worth paying a slightly higher rate for.
Toast and SpotOn sell you a platform and process the payments as part of it. Helcim and Host Merchant Services process payments and expect you to bring a POS. Neither is wrong, but bundling means a software problem and a pricing problem become the same problem — and you can only fix both by switching everything at once.
Several providers here price Amex differently, and online orders very differently — Toast is 2.49% at the table and 3.50% + $0.15 online. If delivery and pickup are a third of your covers, the online rate deserves a third of your attention, and most operators only look at the card-present figure.
