One of the largest acquirers in the world, bought by Global Payments in January 2026 and now being folded into that brand. Enormous reach, but small merchants still get a three-year contract, an auto-renewal clause and pricing that is never published.

Overview

We compare the two for a UK business taking card payments in person, online or both, using the figures each publishes as of October 2026. Both also sell in the US, but we found no published Worldpay US pricing or US merchant terms, so a UK comparison is the only one we can check line by line. Every rate, fee and term in the tables is a UK figure. Both companies publish a card-payments summary that the Payment Systems Regulator requires, built from your annual card turnover, and both call it indicative. For a business taking about £50,000 a year with average sales of £21 to £30, Worldpay's summary is cheaper on personal debit cards (0.6% + 4.5p in person, against Elavon's 0.90% to 0.92% + 4p). Elavon's is cheaper on personal credit cards (1.00% to 1.02% + 4p, against 1.4% + 4.5p) and on business debit cards. Worldpay's standard monthly charges are lower on every line: terminal hire, gateway, PCI fee and monthly minimum. Its summary also settles in 24 hours, against Elavon's 48; Elavon sells next-day payment as a paid upgrade. Elavon also sells packaged plans with cheaper terminal hire than its summary, from £15 a month with rates from 0.99% on personal cards. Both let a business with fewer than 10 staff and under €2 million turnover end the processing agreement on a month's notice. Terminal hire is where you get tied in: Elavon's default minimum hire in its terms is 36 months, though its plans page lists a 12-month contract, and Worldpay's is 18. Elavon belongs to U.S. Bancorp. Worldpay has been owned by Global Payments since 12 January 2026 and is moving to the Global Payments brand. Payment Review grades Worldpay C+ and Elavon C-.

Key Takeaways

  • ✓It depends on how your customers pay. On each company's regulator-required price summary at £50,000 a year, Worldpay is cheaper on personal debit cards (0.6% + 4.5p in person against 0.90% to 0.92% + 4p). Elavon is cheaper on personal credit (1.00% to 1.02% + 4p against 1.4% + 4.5p) and business debit cards (about 1.4% against 2.5%).
  • ✓Worldpay's standard summary has lower fixed costs. Terminal hire is £20 a month against £26, the gateway is included against £25, the PCI fee is £5 against £6 and the monthly minimum is £15 against £30. Settlement takes 24 hours against 48, though Elavon sells next-day payment as a paid upgrade. All of these are indicative.
  • ✓Elavon's packaged plans cut the terminal cost below its own summary: Business Booster charges £15 or £18 a month for a terminal, with rates from 0.99% on personal Visa and Mastercard cards, and Elavon says it is best for £40,000 to £200,000 a year in card sales. That rate is above Worldpay's 0.6% summary rate for in-person debit. Elavon's plans page lists a 12-month contract on every plan, while its Start Simple page says "no long-term contract".
  • ✓Small businesses can leave either processing agreement on a month's notice. Elavon may charge its costs if you leave within six months. Hired terminals are the real commitment: Elavon's default minimum hire in its terms is 36 months (its plans page lists a 12-month contract) and Worldpay's is 18, and leaving early means paying the remaining rentals.
  • ✓Ownership: Elavon is a wholly owned subsidiary of U.S. Bank, part of U.S. Bancorp. Global Payments completed its purchase of Worldpay on 12 January 2026, and Worldpay's UK site now carries a "Worldpay is now Global Payments" logo.

Elavon

Choose Elavon if many of your customers pay by credit or business debit card, if you want a packaged plan with a published price such as Business Booster at £15 a month and rates from 0.99% on personal cards, or if you need to accept UnionPay, JCB or Diners/Discover as well as Visa, Mastercard and Amex. Its terms also leave a business with 10 or more staff or turnover above €2 million, but not both, on a rolling one-month agreement. Check the minimum hire period on your application form, because the default in its terms is 36 months.

Worldpay

Choose Worldpay if most of your customers pay by debit card, if you want lower standard monthly charges and settlement in 24 hours, or if you have both 10 or more staff and turnover above €2 million and want a 12-month default initial term rather than 36 months. Expect an 18-month minimum terminal hire and a move to Global Payments branding over the life of the contract.

The Verdict

It Depends on Your Needs

Why?

Neither is the cheaper choice for every UK business. On the price summaries both companies must publish, Worldpay charges less on personal debit cards and Elavon less on credit and business debit cards, so your card mix decides the rates. Beyond the rates, Worldpay's standard terms look better: lower monthly charges on every line, settlement in 24 hours rather than 48 on the summaries, an 18-month default terminal hire against Elavon's 36, and a 12-month rather than 36-month initial term for a business with both 10 or more staff and turnover above €2 million. Elavon's answer is its packaged plans, which cost £15 to £18 a month with rates from 0.99% on personal cards and list a 12-month contract, and wider card-brand acceptance. Get both summaries for your own turnover, and confirm the minimum hire period on the application form before you sign. Payment Review grades Worldpay C+ and Elavon C-.

Elavon's Business Booster plan publishes its price up front: £15 or £18 a month for the terminal and rates from 0.99% on personal Visa and Mastercard cards, with a 12-month contract listed on the plans page. Its terms set a 36-month default terminal hire, so confirm the period on the application form. Worldpay offers tailored pricing only, so you cannot see a packaged price before you call.

Elavon's indicative business debit rates are about 1.4% in person and 1.9% online, against Worldpay's 2.5% and 2.9% at the same turnover. On business-debit-heavy sales, that gap outweighs Worldpay's lower monthly fees. Neither summary prices business credit or commercial cards, so ask both for those rates.

Worldpay's default initial term for these businesses is 12 months with one month's notice. Elavon's is 36 months with three months' notice. If you meet only one of the two tests, the picture flips: Worldpay still sets a 12-month initial term, while Elavon's terms leave you on a rolling one-month agreement. Both can be changed on the application form, so negotiate the term as well as the rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this comparison

It depends on your card mix. On each company's indicative price summary at £50,000 a year in card sales, Worldpay charges 0.6% + 4.5p for in-person personal debit and Elavon 0.90% to 0.92% + 4p. For personal credit, Elavon charges 1.00% to 1.02% + 4p and Worldpay 1.4% + 4.5p. Worldpay's monthly charges are lower: £20 terminal hire against £26, gateway included against £25, and a £15 monthly minimum against £30. Elavon's packaged Business Booster plan, at £15 a month with rates from 0.99%, cuts the terminal cost below Elavon's summary, but its rate is above Worldpay's 0.6% summary rate for in-person debit. Get each company's summary for your own turnover.

Global Payments owns Worldpay. It announced the purchase from GTCR and FIS on 17 April 2025 and completed it on 12 January 2026. Worldpay's UK site now carries a "Worldpay is now Global Payments" logo. Elavon is a wholly owned subsidiary of U.S. Bank, part of U.S. Bancorp, and in the UK it contracts through U.S. Bank Europe DAC, formerly Elavon Financial Services DAC.

Under each company's current UK terms, a business with fewer than 10 staff and under €2 million turnover can end the processing agreement on one month's notice. Elavon may charge its costs if you leave within the first six months. A business with both 10 or more staff and turnover above €2 million is tied to an initial term by default: 36 months at Elavon and 12 months at Worldpay. One that meets only one of those tests gets Worldpay's 12-month initial term but Elavon's rolling one-month terms. Hired terminals are separate. Elavon's default minimum hire is 36 months, though its plans page lists a 12-month contract. Worldpay's is 18 months. Ending a hire early means paying the remaining rentals: in full plus a recovery fee at Elavon, and less 5% at Worldpay.

Worldpay's indicative price summary shows settlement in 24 hours, and its small-business page promises next-day settlement. Elavon's summary shows 48 hours, and its plan pages say it funds within 48 hours unless you pay to upgrade to same- or next-day payments through Faster Payments. Its terms warn that payment can sometimes take up to three business days.

No. Every figure here is from the two companies' UK pages and UK terms. In the US, we found no published Worldpay rates or merchant terms. Elavon's US pricing page advertises in-person rates starting at 2.60% + 12¢ for qualified transactions and online rates from 3.30% + 30¢, with no cancellation or early termination fees, but we cannot set those against Worldpay figures on the same basis.
