Midtrans vs Xendit (Indonesia)

Midtrans

Midtrans

B-

Midtrans is an Indonesian online payment gateway run by PT Midtrans from Jakarta. It launched in 2012 as Veritrans Indonesia, a joint venture with Japanese partners, renamed itself Midtrans in 2016 and was bought by Gojek in December 2017. Gojek merged with Tokopedia in 2021 to form GoTo, and Midtrans now sits in GoTo Financial alongside GoPay. It lets a business with an Indonesian legal presence take rupiah payments online by card, bank virtual account, GoPay and other e-wallets, QRIS, convenience-store cash and pay-later, through a hosted checkout, an API, plugins or payment links. Pricing is published per method with no setup or monthly fee. As of October 2026, cards cost 2.9% + IDR 2,000, virtual accounts IDR 4,000 and QRIS 0.7%. Most fees are quoted before Indonesian VAT (PPN), which is deducted on top. QRIS, GoPay and ShopeePay are the exceptions. On its standard aggregator model Midtrans signs the merchant, collects the funds and pays them out. Its help centre says money can be withdrawn three business days after a payment settles. The merchant terms are accepted during sign-up and are not published on midtrans.com; an undated copy we found describes a one-year, automatically renewing agreement and lets Midtrans hold payouts when it suspects fraud. Public reviews are thin, and the complaints we found describe withdrawals blocked while an account was under review.

Xendit

Xendit

B-

Xendit is a Jakarta-based payments company founded in 2015 by Moses Lo, Tessa Wijaya, Bo Chen and Juan Gonzalez, which went through Y Combinator's Summer 2015 batch as a peer-to-peer payments app and pivoted to payment gateway products in 2016. It now operates in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Hong Kong, and publishes a Mexican rate card as well. A merchant signs Xendit's own services agreement and is paid out of a Xendit balance, under licences held by group companies in each market — a Bank Indonesia payment gateway licence, a Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas operator-of-payment-system registration, a Bank Negara Malaysia merchant-acquiring licence through Payex, a Bank of Thailand payment service provider licence, and others. Xendit publishes one regional rate card with every method's price, which is its real strength: as of September 2026, domestic cards are 2.9% + IDR 2,000 in Indonesia, 3.5% in the Philippines, 1.9% to 2.0% in Malaysia and 3.2% + THB 10 in Thailand, QRIS is 0.7%, and Indonesian virtual accounts are a flat IDR 9,000. The catch is a pricing overhaul. From 1 October 2026 Xendit adds a fixed processing fee to every transaction attempt — IDR 4,000, PHP 11, MYR 0.90 or THB 7, including failed attempts and refunds — plus a US$25 card chargeback fee, a US$50 monthly minimum for low-volume and dormant accounts and a US$250 monthly charge for merchants still on its legacy API. On small tickets the fixed fee can exceed the percentage. Card settlement is five business days in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Xendit says it serves more than 15,200 businesses; its most recent widely reported round was a US$300 million Series D in May 2022, at an undisclosed valuation.

Overview

This compares the two gateways for a business selling in Indonesia in rupiah, using each company's published Indonesian rates as of October 2026 for ordinary (non-gaming, non-digital-goods) merchants. Fees are before Indonesian VAT (PPN) unless a cell says otherwise. The two publish the same card rate, 2.9% + IDR 2,000. The difference is that since 1 October 2026 Xendit adds a fixed IDR 4,000 processing fee to every transaction attempt, including failed payments and refunds, and its virtual-account, e-wallet, convenience-store and pay-later fees are also higher than Midtrans's. On every Indonesian rate both companies publish, Midtrans is cheaper. A virtual-account payment costs IDR 4,000 on Midtrans and IDR 13,000 on Xendit. Xendit also charges accounts a monthly minimum of IDR 900,000 if their fees for the month come to less than US$50. Xendit's advantages are elsewhere. Most bank virtual-account payments reach your Xendit balance instantly and e-wallets in one or two days, where Midtrans makes sales withdrawable three business days after the payment settles. It also offers paid same-day Early Settlement and publishes rates for seven other markets, while Midtrans works only in Indonesia and only in rupiah. Payment Review grades both B-.

Key Takeaways

  • ✓Midtrans is cheaper on every Indonesian rate both publish. Cards cost 2.9% + IDR 2,000 on both, but Xendit has added an IDR 4,000 processing fee to every attempt since 1 October 2026. A IDR 300,000 card payment costs IDR 10,700 on Midtrans and IDR 14,700 on Xendit.
  • ✓The gap is widest on bank transfers and e-wallets. A virtual account costs IDR 4,000 on Midtrans and IDR 9,000 + IDR 4,000 on Xendit. OVO and DANA cost 1.5% on Midtrans and 3% + IDR 4,000 on Xendit.
  • ✓Bank Indonesia has set the QRIS merchant fee at 0% on payments up to IDR 100,000 for every merchant since 1 October 2026. Midtrans's pricing page still lists 0.7%. Xendit still adds its IDR 4,000 processing fee, so a IDR 50,000 QRIS payment costs IDR 4,000 there.
  • ✓Xendit gets bank-transfer money to you sooner. Most virtual-account payments settle instantly (BCA the next business day) and e-wallets in one to two days, while Midtrans makes sales withdrawable three business days after they settle. Cards are slower on Xendit, at five business days; Midtrans does not publish a card-specific timing.
  • ✓Xendit charges a monthly minimum of IDR 900,000 when your fees for the month total under US$50, plus IDR 450,000 per card chargeback. Midtrans charges no monthly fee and publishes no chargeback fee. Xendit is the one to choose if you also sell in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand or Vietnam.

Midtrans

Midtrans suits businesses that sell only in Indonesia and want the lowest published fees on cards, virtual accounts, QRIS, e-wallets and convenience-store payments, with no monthly minimum. It also suits small sellers taking low-value payments, and anyone sending payouts by bank transfer at a flat IDR 5,000.

Xendit

Xendit suits businesses that sell in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries through one integration and contract, and whose order values are large enough that a fixed IDR 4,000 per attempt does not matter. It also suits merchants who need bank-transfer money fast or want paid same-day Early Settlement.

The Verdict

It Depends on Your Needs

Why?

Payment Review grades both B-. For a business that sells only in Indonesia, Midtrans is the better buy. It is cheaper on every Indonesian rate both companies publish, often by a wide margin since Xendit added its IDR 4,000 per-attempt fee on 1 October 2026. It also has no monthly minimum and costs less for payouts. Xendit is the better choice for a business that sells in more than one Southeast Asian country, needs bank-transfer money to arrive within the day, or wants paid same-day settlement. It also has a published, rolling agreement, where Midtrans's terms are shown only at sign-up. Small-ticket, Indonesia-only merchants should choose Midtrans. Regional businesses with larger orders can justify Xendit.

Virtual accounts cost IDR 4,000 on Midtrans and IDR 13,000 in total on Xendit. OVO and DANA cost 1.5% on Midtrans and 3% + IDR 4,000 on Xendit. Both quote most fees before VAT. Since 1 October 2026 Xendit has charged a fixed processing fee on every payment, payout and refund attempt, on top of the payment-method fee. It applies to failed attempts too. In Indonesia it is IDR 4,000 before VAT. The same pricing change added card chargeback fees of IDR 450,000, a monthly minimum of IDR 900,000 for accounts invoiced under US$50 a month, and an IDR 4,500,000 monthly fee for merchants still on the legacy API.

Bank Indonesia sets the QRIS merchant fee. Since 1 October 2026 it has been 0% for every merchant on transactions up to IDR 100,000, and micro businesses pay 0% up to IDR 500,000. Above that, ordinary merchants pay 0.7%. Midtrans's pricing page still lists a flat 0.7%, and it has not published whether it now applies the 0% tier. Xendit's timing depends on the method: most virtual accounts are instant, BCA takes one business day, e-wallets and QRIS one to two days, and cards and Alfamart or Indomaret five business days. Xendit also sells same-day Early Settlement at an unpublished price.

Bank Indonesia's register lists PT Midtrans as a licensed payment service provider (category 2). It lists Xendit's Indonesian company, PT Sinar Digital Terdepan, with category 1 and category 2 payment licences and a QRIS approval.

Midtrans processes rupiah only and requires Indonesian registration documents, though it accepts foreign-issued cards. Xendit operates in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Hong Kong, and publishes a Mexican rate card, so it suits a business selling in several of those countries.
