Midtrans Review

Midtrans is an Indonesian online payment gateway run by PT Midtrans from Jakarta. It launched in 2012 as Veritrans Indonesia, a joint venture with Japanese partners, renamed itself Midtrans in 2016 and was bought by Gojek in December 2017. Gojek merged with Tokopedia in 2021 to form GoTo, and Midtrans now sits in GoTo Financial alongside GoPay. It lets a business with an Indonesian legal presence take rupiah payments online by card, bank virtual account, GoPay and other e-wallets, QRIS, convenience-store cash and pay-later, through a hosted checkout, an API, plugins or payment links. Pricing is published per method with no setup or monthly fee. As of October 2026, cards cost 2.9% + IDR 2,000, virtual accounts IDR 4,000 and QRIS 0.7%. Most fees are quoted before Indonesian VAT (PPN), which is deducted on top. QRIS, GoPay and ShopeePay are the exceptions. On its standard aggregator model Midtrans signs the merchant, collects the funds and pays them out. Its help centre says money can be withdrawn three business days after a payment settles. The merchant terms are accepted during sign-up and are not published on midtrans.com; an undated copy we found describes a one-year, automatically renewing agreement and lets Midtrans hold payouts when it suspects fraud. Public reviews are thin, and the complaints we found describe withdrawals blocked while an account was under review.

Chargeback
Midtrans publishes no chargeback fee. Its help centre says evidence is usually due within seven calendar days. The undated terms copy we found says the merchant repays a lost chargeback, deducted from payouts on some aggregator accounts, and that a fraud chargeback on a 3-D Secure-protected transaction is waived for the merchant.

The take

B-

Midtrans is a sensible default for an Indonesian online business that wants every common local payment method, including GoPay, on one integration at a published price. It has a long track record and appears on Bank Indonesia's register of licensed payment service providers. The rate card is clear on the headline numbers but needs care. Most fees exclude VAT, three methods include it, and the same pricing page carries an older explainer with different figures. We grade it B- for four reasons. Its help centre says funds wait three business days before they can be withdrawn. The merchant terms are not published on its website, and the only copy we could find, undated and probably out of date, runs a year at a time and gives Midtrans wide room to hold payouts or end the service. Gaming and digital-goods rates are not published. And the little public feedback there is centres on blocked withdrawals during account reviews.

Skip if you

Chapter 1

Should you choose Midtrans?

The headline take, the audiences it's right (and wrong) for, and the genuine differentiators behind the verdict.

Pros, cons, and audience

Pros

  • Publishes a per-method rate card with no setup, subscription or integration fee: as of October 2026, cards 2.9% + IDR 2,000, virtual accounts IDR 4,000, QRIS 0.7%
  • Covers the methods Indonesian shoppers actually use (bank virtual accounts, QRIS, GoPay, ShopeePay, DANA, OVO, convenience-store cash and pay-later) on one integration
  • Says it is the only payment gateway that processes GoPay, which brings GoPay deeplinks and tokenisation for one-click and recurring payments
  • Listed on Bank Indonesia's register as a licensed payment service provider (Category 2, licence dated 1 July 2021), ISO/IEC 27001 certified, running since 2012 and owned by Gojek, now GoTo, since 2017
  • Payment links, subscriptions, promotions, refunds API and bulk payouts are part of the same dashboard, with a self-serve sign-up

Cons

  • Most published fees exclude VAT, but QRIS, GoPay and ShopeePay include it, so the real cost differs by method
  • The pricing page contradicts itself: an older explainer lower on the same page lists different ShopeePay and GoPay payout fees from the current table
  • Midtrans's help centre says sales can only be withdrawn three business days after a payment settles, and automatic withdrawals wait until at least IDR 50,000 has built up
  • The merchant agreement is not published on midtrans.com. The only copy we found, undated and probably out of date, runs a year at a time, renews automatically, and lets Midtrans hold payouts on suspicion of fraud or end the service immediately at its discretion
  • Rupiah only, and sign-up needs Indonesian documents (a KTP or NPWP, or a KITAS for foreign individuals)
  • Gaming and digital-product businesses get unpublished rates, and the few public complaints describe withdrawals frozen while an account was under review

What makes them different

The genuine differentiator

Midtrans is GoTo's own gateway, and it says it is the only payment gateway that processes GoPay transactions. That gives it GoPay deeplinks and GoPay tokenisation for one-click and recurring payments. Around that it bundles payment links, subscriptions, a promo engine and an in-house fraud screen at no extra published charge, and offers bulk payouts priced per transfer.

What Midtrans is

Midtrans is an online payment gateway for businesses selling in Indonesia, operated by PT Midtrans from Pasaraya Blok M in South Jakarta. It takes payments in rupiah by card, bank virtual account, e-wallet, QRIS, convenience-store cash and pay-later, and pays the money out to the merchant's Indonesian bank account. It is built for online and in-app sales. Its enterprise page mentions offline acceptance for physical stores, but publishes no prices for it. Bank Indonesia's register of licensed institutions lists PT Midtrans as an operating payment service provider (Penyedia Jasa Pembayaran, licence category 2) under licence 23/666/DKSP/Srt/B dated 1 July 2021. Midtrans itself says it has been licensed, registered and authorised by Bank Indonesia since 2018. It also says it is registered as an electronic system provider with the communications ministry, and holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification.

History and ownership

The business launched in 2012 as Veritrans Indonesia. It was a joint venture between the Japanese payment processor VeriTrans, the Japanese e-commerce firm Netprice and an investment arm of Indonesia's MidPlaza group, and was led by Ryu Kawano Suliawan. It added direct debit in 2013, virtual accounts in 2014 and over-the-counter payments in 2015, and renamed itself Midtrans in 2016. In December 2017 Gojek bought Midtrans together with the offline processor Kartuku and the lender Mapan, without disclosing a price. Midtrans's own timeline then lists the launch of GoPay on Midtrans in 2018 and of QRIS in 2020. Gojek and Tokopedia announced their merger in May 2021, forming the GoTo group, whose parent, PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk, listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange on 11 April 2022. Midtrans sits in GoTo Financial, the group's fintech arm, alongside GoPay and the Moka point-of-sale system. As of October 2026 its website still describes it as part of GoTo Financial and names PT Midtrans as the operator. In October 2020, at its eighth anniversary, Midtrans's founder said it had served more than 500,000 businesses, of which 8,000 were online businesses. We found no newer figure from the company, so treat that number as dated.

What it costs

Midtrans publishes one rate per payment method. As of October 2026 the pricing page lists:

  • Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, domestic or foreign): 2.9% + IDR 2,000 per transaction.
  • Bank transfer by virtual account (BCA, BRI, BNI, Mandiri, Permata, CIMB, Danamon, BSI, SeaBank, Bank Saqu): IDR 4,000 per transaction.
  • E-wallets and QR: GoPay 2%, QRIS 0.7%, ShopeePay 2%, DANA 1.5%, OVO 1.5%.
  • Over the counter (Indomaret, Alfamart, Alfamidi, DAN+DAN): IDR 5,000 per transaction.
  • Pay-later: Akulaku 1.7%, Kredivo 2%.
  • Payouts (the pricing page's "Withdrawal" tab): IDR 5,000 per transfer to a bank account and IDR 2,500 to GoPay. The page's explainer calls these payout (disbursement) fees; the help centre says withdrawing your own balance carries no additional fee.
  • No setup, subscription or integration fee. You pay only for successful transactions.

Two qualifications matter. First, the page says all charges exclude Value-Added Tax (PPN) except QRIS, GoPay and ShopeePay. For every other method, VAT is calculated on Midtrans's fee and deducted with it. Midtrans's help centre is not consistent on this: its GoPay refund article works an example of 2% plus 11% VAT. Second, "gaming and digital product companies are subject to different rates", and those rates are not published. The QRIS rate of 0.7% is the merchant discount rate Bank Indonesia sets for regular merchants, so it is set by the central bank rather than by Midtrans, and special merchant categories can differ. Merchants may pass fees to customers by adding them to the order total, which Midtrans's help centre explains how to do.

As an illustration, take a shop selling IDR 300,000 orders. A card payment costs IDR 8,700 + IDR 2,000 = IDR 10,700 before VAT, about 3.6%. The same order by virtual account costs IDR 4,000 before VAT, about 1.3%, and by QRIS IDR 2,100 including VAT, 0.7%. On a small IDR 50,000 order the fixed fees bite: a card payment costs IDR 3,450 before VAT (6.9%) and a virtual account IDR 4,000 (8%), while QRIS stays at IDR 350. Shops with small baskets should steer customers towards QRIS and e-wallets.

The same pricing page also carries an older Indonesian explainer whose figures differ from the current table. It lists ShopeePay at 1.5% rather than 2% and GoPay payouts at IDR 1,000 rather than IDR 2,500, and says over-the-counter fees include tax. We have used the current table and recommend confirming your rates in the agreement or addendum you sign.

How it works: aggregator or facilitator

Midtrans offers two models. On the aggregator model, the default for self-serve sign-ups, Midtrans signs the merchant directly, provides the payment system, collects the money in its own account and pays it out to the merchant after deducting fees. Card refunds and chargebacks run through Midtrans. On the facilitator model, a merchant with its own agreement with a bank or payment provider uses Midtrans only as the technical gateway. The bank settles to the merchant directly, and refunds and chargebacks are handled with the bank. Midtrans's card acquiring banks include BNI, CIMB Niaga, Mandiri, Mega, BRI, BCA and Maybank.

Sign-up is self-serve. You register online, then submit documents to activate the account. Individuals need a KTP and NPWP, and companies need deeds, ministry decrees, director and company tax IDs and business licences. Foreign individuals need a passport plus a KITAS, KITAP or KIMS, and foreign companies need, among other papers, the owner's or director's Indonesian NPWP. Your website, app or social-media page must be live, show products and prices in rupiah and match your registered category. Each extra payment method is activated from the dashboard by uploading documents and signing an addendum. Integration options are the Snap pop-up checkout, the Core API, Android and iOS SDKs, plugins for e-commerce platforms, and payment links that need no website at all. Midtrans processes rupiah only, so a merchant pricing in another currency must convert to IDR before charging.

Payouts and refunds

On the aggregator model, Midtrans's help centre says money from a payment becomes withdrawable three business days after the transaction settles, which it describes as the cut-off set by the banks. A newer help-centre page on the balance screen says the cut-off date varies by payment method, and the undated terms copy we found lists per-method periods counted from the transaction date: one day for bill payment, two for QRIS, three for cards and five for other methods. We have used the help centre's three business days as the headline and recommend checking your dashboard. Withdrawals requested from the dashboard before 11:00 Jakarta time on a working day arrive the same day; later requests arrive the next working day. On-demand withdrawal is unavailable between midnight and 1 a.m., and each withdrawal must be at least IDR 10,000. Automatic withdrawals can be scheduled daily, every few working days, weekly or monthly, but they wait until at least IDR 50,000 is available. (The terms copy gives an automatic threshold of IDR 250,000; the help centre's IDR 50,000 is newer.) They also stop if there has been no successful transaction in the eight days before the scheduled date. The help centre says withdrawing your own balance carries no additional fee, but its billing guide lists a bank transfer fee where your payout account is at a different bank from Midtrans's. For a first withdrawal, your documents must be complete and you need at least one settled transaction.

Card refunds, full or partial, can be issued from the dashboard for up to six months after the transaction. They reach the cardholder in 7 to 14 days, or up to 45 days for a foreign card. The refunded amount is deducted from your next payout. Bank-transfer virtual accounts (Permata, Mandiri bill, BNI, BCA and BRI) cannot be refunded through Midtrans, so the merchant has to send the money back itself. Midtrans says it charges no extra fee for a GoPay refund.

Merchant terms, holds and chargebacks

Midtrans does not publish its merchant agreement on midtrans.com. Its sign-up guide says merchants confirm the terms when submitting their activation documents and receive the accepted terms by email, downloadable for 24 hours. The only copy we could find is an undated copy of Midtrans's activation terms hosted on its form provider (tfaforms.com), which midtrans.com does not link to and whose fee table predates the current pricing page: its fee table quotes VAT-inclusive prices, and its virtual-account and fixed card fees (IDR 4,400 and IDR 2,200) equal today's IDR 4,000 and IDR 2,000 plus VAT at 10%, the rate before Indonesia's April 2022 increase, which suggests the copy is at least that old. Treat what follows as indicative, not as the agreement you will sign. That copy is an electronic contract between the merchant and PT Midtrans. It runs for one year from acceptance and renews automatically for further one-year periods unless either side gives at least 30 calendar days' notice before the end of the term (Pasal 9). Either side may terminate early for a breach that cannot be fixed or is not fixed within 30 days, or for insolvency or loss of licence, and Midtrans may end the agreement immediately, in whole or in part, at its own discretion. Midtrans may suspend the service with or without notice (Pasal 7) and change the terms and its standard procedures at its discretion after notifying merchants (Pasal 16). On aggregator accounts, Midtrans may withhold payouts if it, a bank, a card network or a provider suspects the merchant of fraud, and if the merchant cannot prove otherwise it may refund all of its transactions and terminate. Disputes go to BANI arbitration in Jakarta, in Indonesian, before three arbitrators (Pasal 12). Ask Midtrans for the terms you are accepting and keep the emailed copy.

Midtrans's help centre says chargeback evidence is usually due within seven calendar days and that its fraud screen is included by default. Midtrans publishes no chargeback fee. According to the undated terms copy, the merchant repays the bank for any chargeback it loses; on some aggregator accounts the amount is deducted from payouts, while facilitator merchants settle with the bank directly. A fraud chargeback on a card payment authenticated with 3-D Secure is waived for the merchant, merchants must keep confirmed fraud below 1% of card sales, and aggregator merchants must use both 3-D Secure and Midtrans's fraud screen, which can decline transactions it flags.

Restricted businesses

Midtrans does not take gambling, adult goods or nightclubs, weapons and hazardous goods, counterfeits, illegal drugs (it names kratom and magic mushrooms), cash-out schemes on credit cards or pay-later limits, unauthorised brokers for government services, game boosting, Ponzi schemes, hacking tools or hate material. It also excludes profit-seeking activity by non-profits and unlicensed law or accounting firms. Platforms such as web developers, POS providers and software marketplaces may not collect payments for sub-merchants who are not registered with Midtrans. Gaming and digital-goods sellers are accepted but priced separately.

Support and reputation

Support is by phone, email and a web form. Midtrans lists call-centre hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Western Indonesian Time on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at weekends, and says it answers web forms within 30 minutes during business hours. Form replies run 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at weekends and on public holidays.

Independent reviews are thin. As of October 2026 we found no Trustpilot profile for midtrans.com. The Indonesian consumer-complaints site Media Konsumen carries four reader letters tagged Midtrans, from 2020 to 2024. Three are from sellers who could not withdraw their balance. In the most recent, from October 2024, an account was switched to "under review" after its first three payments, and the writer was repeatedly asked to explain the transaction flow and told to wait two to five working days. The writer later reported escalating to Bank Indonesia's consumer-protection unit, and the site records no reply from Midtrans. Four letters are not a pattern, but they match how the terms work: withdrawals can be held while Midtrans reviews an account. Our searches found no lawsuit, fine or regulatory action naming Midtrans.

Who should use Midtrans

Midtrans suits an Indonesian online business that wants all the common local payment methods, and GoPay in particular, on one integration with published pricing, and that is comfortable accepting Indonesian-language terms that are not published in advance. It suits small sellers too, because payment links need no website and there is no monthly fee. It does not suit a business selling in another currency or without an Indonesian entity or residence permit, a gaming or digital-goods seller that wants a published rate, or anyone who needs access to sales in under three business days. Before signing, confirm how VAT applies to each method you enable, which version of the terms you are accepting, and whether your account is on the aggregator or facilitator model. Keep a working reserve in case a review freezes withdrawals.
