Scalapay Review

Scalapay is a buy now, pay later provider founded in 2019 and run from Milan, with an Irish-registered parent company, Scalapay Limited. Its payment services are provided by Scalapay IP S.p.A., an Italian payment institution supervised by the Bank of Italy, which Scalapay acquired as Cabel IP in March 2023. Shoppers split a purchase into three or four monthly payments, or pay later, online or in store. The merchant is paid the full order value less Scalapay's fee, and Scalapay carries the risk that the shopper does not pay. In July 2026 Scalapay said it had more than 13 million users and over 12,000 brand partners, and named Italy, France, Spain, Belgium and Portugal as its markets. Scalapay does not publish each merchant's rate, but its regulated merchant information sheet (version 8, updated 15 June 2026) caps the fee at 10% of the order plus €1.00 per transaction. The agreement has no fixed term, and either side can leave free of charge on 30 days' notice. Scalapay only takes payments in euros and only signs businesses registered in the EU countries it lists, so it is not an option for a US business selling to US shoppers.

The take

B

For a retailer selling to shoppers in Italy, Scalapay is the pay-later button many of them know, and it also operates in France, Spain, Portugal and Belgium. You are paid the full order value, Scalapay carries non-payment and fraud risk, and plugins cover Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and PrestaShop, with Stripe as a further route. Its contract terms are published more fully than most BNPL peers': an open-ended agreement you can leave free of charge on 30 days' notice, 60 days' notice of any change, and a published, regulated cap on what it can charge. It earns a B rather than higher because the cap is wide (up to 10% plus €1 an order) and your actual rate only arrives after you register, because the merchant help centre gives two different payout timelines, and because Scalapay is a euro-only, EU-only service.

Skip if you

Are a US business, need to charge in any currency other than the euro, sell in a category Scalapay bans (weapons, gambling, crypto and financial products, money transfer, gold buying and others), work on margins too thin for a fee that can reach 10% of the order, or need a published rate before you apply.

Chapter 1

Should you choose Scalapay?

The headline take, the audiences it's right (and wrong) for, and the genuine differentiators behind the verdict.

About

Scalapay is a buy now, pay later provider founded in 2019 and run from Milan, with an Irish-registered parent company, Scalapay Limited. Its payment services are provided by Scalapay IP S.p.A., an Italian payment institution supervised by the Bank of Italy, which Scalapay acquired as Cabel IP in March 2023. Scalapay only takes payments in euros and only signs businesses registered in the EU countries it lists, so it is not an option for a US business selling to US shoppers.

Pros, cons, and audience

Pros

  • A published, regulated fee cap: Scalapay IP's merchant information sheet limits the fee to 10% of the order plus €1.00 per transaction, which most BNPL providers do not publish at all
  • Merchant-friendly exit terms: no fixed term, free withdrawal on 30 days' notice, and 60 days' notice before Scalapay can change the agreement
  • You are paid the full order value, and Scalapay carries non-payment and fraud risk on approved orders
  • Regulated by the Bank of Italy through Scalapay IP, with a formal complaints route and access to the Italian banking ombudsman (ABF) for merchants
  • Strong in Southern Europe, reporting more than 13 million users and over 12,000 brand partners in July 2026, and a 4.8 Trustpilot score from over 145,000 reviews by shoppers, not merchants (September 2026)
  • Covers online, in store (QR code or virtual card on your existing terminal) and Pay by Link, with plugins for Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and PrestaShop and availability through Stripe

Cons

  • Your actual rate is not published: Scalapay sends pricing only after you register, and the cap it must disclose (10% + €1.00) is high
  • Euro only and limited to businesses registered in the EU countries it lists, so it is not a fit for US merchants or multi-currency sellers
  • Unclear payout timing: the English help centre says daily transfers that arrive in about 5 business days, while the Italian page says transfers within 5 business days of each order and funds in about 7
  • Scalapay can hold back payouts as a reserve or ask for a security deposit if you breach the agreement, and the full Activation Agreement is not public
  • Stale and inconsistent public figures: its Italian merchant page still cites 8,000 stores and 5,000 brand partners, against the 12,000 it announced in July 2026

What makes them different

The genuine differentiator

Scalapay is regulated as an Italian payment institution, so Bank of Italy transparency rules oblige it to publish a merchant information sheet. That sheet sets a maximum fee (10% of the order plus €1.00) and core contract terms, which most BNPL providers keep private. It also gives merchants access to the Italian banking ombudsman, the Arbitro Bancario Finanziario, for disputes with Scalapay.

What Scalapay is

Scalapay is a buy now, pay later provider founded in 2019. Simone Mancini, its CEO, and Johnny Mitrevski are among its co-founders. It operates from Milan through Scalapay S.r.l. Its parent company, Scalapay Limited, is registered in Dublin, Ireland, and is the sole shareholder of Scalapay IP S.p.A., the regulated entity that merchants contract with. Scalapay IP began as Cabel IP, an existing Italian payment institution. Scalapay completed the purchase on 2 March 2023 after Bank of Italy approval and renamed it. It is entered as number 5 in the Bank of Italy's register of payment institutions. At the time of the purchase, Scalapay said the licence would be passported to other EU countries.

Its last announced equity round was a $497 million Series B in February 2022, led by Tencent and Willoughby Capital, which Scalapay said made it a unicorn. We found no equity round announced since; its later funding announcements are debt. In October 2024 BNP Paribas agreed to provide senior financing for up to €3 billion of current and future receivables, and in December 2025 the European Investment Bank signed a €70 million Scale-Up Debt facility, its first direct financing of an Italian unicorn. Scalapay's July 2026 Stripe announcement gives the newest scale figures: more than 13 million users and over 12,000 brand partners. In a December 2025 Milano Finanza interview, CEO Simone Mancini said Scalapay had reached monthly breakeven during 2025 and expected a full-year profit in 2026, with about €3 billion of annualised transaction volume. Those figures come from the interview and are not audited.

Where it works

Scalapay is a Southern European business. Its core markets are Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, and Belgium has been added. It only takes payments in euros. Its Italian merchant help centre lists 16 countries where a business can be registered to activate Scalapay, from Austria to Spain, and nine countries whose shoppers can use it at checkout. The English help centre lists only the nine, plus five French overseas territories, as activation countries, so check with Scalapay before assuming your country is covered. The widest reach is through Stripe: since July 2026, Stripe businesses in more than 30 countries can offer Scalapay to shoppers in its five core markets. A US merchant selling to US shoppers cannot use it.

How the merchant model works

You add Scalapay as a payment method. The shopper creates an account, links a Visa or Mastercard debit, credit or prepaid card, and is approved or declined by Scalapay. You receive the full order amount less your commission, and Scalapay collects the instalments and carries the fraud and non-payment risk. Once Scalapay approves an order you cannot change it, only refund all or part of it. Refunds are yours to issue, from the merchant portal or automatically through an integrated plugin. Scalapay then cancels the unpaid instalments and returns what the shopper has paid. The main products are Pay in 3, Pay in 4 (on every order, automatically above a threshold you set, or at the shopper's choice), Pay Later in 14 or 30 days, Pay by Link, and in-store payments. Italian merchants can also offer 6 to 36 instalments up to €4,000 with Deutsche Bank. Merchants also get a listing in Scalapay's store directory and access to its affiliate and co-marketing programmes.

Pricing

Scalapay does not publish individual rates. Its help centre says you register first and receive pricing by email. But because Scalapay IP is an Italian payment institution, it must publish a merchant information sheet, and version 8 (updated 15 June 2026, identical in the Italian, English and French editions) sets out the ceiling:

  • Variable fee: up to 10% of the total order value, with your rate set in the Activation Agreement.
  • Fixed fee: up to €1.00 per transaction, with your rate set in the Activation Agreement.
  • Periodic reports: €2 per paper report, free on other durable media.
  • Italian stamp duty: €16 once at signing, plus €2 in any month when your commission invoice exceeds €77.47. Scalapay's invoices are VAT-exempt.
  • Activation fee: a Confcommercio Milano members' offer for 2026 (updated November 2025) waives a €299 activation fee and discounts the turnover-based variable fee by 10-20%. The fee does not appear in Scalapay's own information sheet, so ask whether it applies to you.

A 10% cap tells you the worst case, not the typical rate. For a rough benchmark, the analyst firm Sacra estimates merchant revenue at about 2.7% of Scalapay's transaction volume in 2024, down from 3.3% in 2023. That is a blended average across all merchants and products, which we have not been able to check against Scalapay's accounts. Merchants should also know that shoppers may pay too. Scalapay's Italian shopper terms charge late fees of up to €6 per instalment after 24 hours and up to a further €6 after nine days, capped at 15% of the order. A second version of those terms adds a service fee for Pay in 3, Pay in 4 and Pay Later, with maximum annual rates of about 14-15%. A Scalapay executive said in June 2026 that Pay in 4 carries a small fee and that about 60% of Spanish shoppers choose it. Ask Scalapay which shopper pricing will apply at your checkout.

Payouts, contract and holds

Payouts are bank transfers of the order amount less refunds, and less commission unless your commission is invoiced at month end. The published timing is inconsistent. The English help page says daily transfers of the previous 24 hours' orders, arriving in about 5 business days. The Italian page says transfers within 5 business days of each order, arriving within about 7. The Pay in 4 product page says daily transfers. Scalapay publishes no minimum payout and no paid faster option, and the Deutsche Bank long-term plans pay within 2 business days. The contract terms are published more fully than most in this category. The Activation Agreement has no fixed term. Either side can leave free of charge on 30 days' notice. Scalapay needs 60 days' notice to change the terms, and you can leave before a change applies. Scalapay can terminate if you fail to meet your obligations, and it can hold back payouts as a reserve, after telling you, or ask for a deposit if you breach the agreement. Only the information sheet is public, not the full Activation Agreement, so read the full agreement before you sign.

Reputation and complaints

Our searches of news, Italian competition authority (AGCM) and Bank of Italy sources found no lawsuit, regulatory fine or enforcement action naming Scalapay. As of 30 September 2026, Scalapay's claimed Trustpilot profile shows a TrustScore of 4.8 from 145,196 reviews, 92% of them five-star, and Trustpilot shows it replying to 93% of negative reviews. These are shopper reviews, not merchant reviews, and Trustpilot notes that Scalapay has not invited customers to review it recently, so the reviews may not be representative. The one-star reviews mention unresponsive support and an unhelpful chatbot, duplicate charges, refunds after returns that were slow to reach the shopper, spending limits cut without warning, declined orders from long-standing users, and €6 late fees. Refund complaints matter to merchants, because the refund starts with you. Scalapay IP's own 2025 complaints report lists 31 formal complaints: 10 upheld, 1 partly upheld and 20 rejected. The most common subjects were problems with the seller, refunds, unrecognised payments and payment methods. It also lists 8 appeals to the banking ombudsman (ABF) and 3 complaints to the Bank of Italy, most of them about problems with the seller or delivery. We found no independent merchant reviews.

Who Scalapay suits

Scalapay suits an EU-registered retailer selling to Italian shoppers above all, and to French, Spanish and Portuguese shoppers as well. It fits fashion, beauty, travel, home and personal-services businesses where splitting a payment lifts the basket, including shops that want one provider for online, in store and payment links. It is a poor fit for anyone outside the eurozone markets it serves, for low-margin sellers, and for businesses that need a guaranteed next-day payout. Before signing, get your variable and fixed fee in writing and ask whether the €299 activation fee applies. Confirm which payout schedule your agreement uses, and ask whether your shoppers will be offered fee-bearing Pay in 4.

In-person

As of September 2026, Scalapay IP's merchant information sheet sets one maximum for its online and in-store service alike: a variable fee of up to 10% of the order value and a fixed fee of up to €1.00 per transaction, with your actual rates written into your Activation Agreement. It sets no separate in-store pricing. In store, shoppers pay by scanning a QR code generated in the Scalapay app, or with a single-use Scalapay virtual card added to their phone wallet and tapped on your existing card terminal. Scalapay says the virtual card only works once in-store activation is complete. Pay by Link lets staff send a payment link from the merchant portal, which the shopper must use within an hour.

Card-present retail and point-of-sale transactions

International

Scalapay only processes payments in euros. Its Italian merchant help centre says businesses with a registered office in 16 countries can activate it (Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain), and that shoppers can buy with it from nine (Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain). The English help centre instead gives those nine, plus five French overseas territories, as the countries where Scalapay can be activated, so confirm your country with Scalapay. Since July 2026, businesses on Stripe in more than 30 countries can switch on Scalapay to sell cross-border into Italy, France, Belgium, Spain and Portugal, according to Scalapay's announcement. There is no US offering.

According to Scalapay IP's merchant information sheet (version 8, updated 15 June 2026), the Activation Agreement has no fixed term. Either side can withdraw at any time and free of charge on 30 calendar days' notice by registered letter, certified email (PEC) or ordinary email, or with no notice where there is just cause. Scalapay can also terminate by registered letter if you fail to meet any obligation in the agreement, on one or more occasions. The agreement ends automatically if you do not supply the information Scalapay needs for its anti-money-laundering checks, or if those checks mean it cannot continue with you. Scalapay can change the agreement on at least 60 days' notice, and changes are deemed accepted unless you withdraw before they take effect. If you breach the agreement, Scalapay can hold back money it owes you as a reserve, after notifying you, or ask you or your group companies for security such as a deposit. Complaints go to Scalapay IP's complaints office, which aims to reply within 30 days. After that you can appeal to the Arbitro Bancario Finanziario (ABF, the banking and financial ombudsman), use a recognised conciliation body such as the Conciliatore Bancario Finanziario, or write to the Bank of Italy. Before suing, you must first try mediation.

Scalapay's product page says the merchant is paid by bank transfer within 2 business days and that Deutsche Bank and Scalapay carry the default risk. Scalapay IP also publishes its own consumer-credit terms for longer 'Pay in 12' style plans, and a Scalapay executive said in June 2026 that it offers 12- and 18-month financing in-house and with BBVA in Spain.

Pricing

Scalapay does not publish each merchant's rate. Scalapay says you receive pricing by email after registering. As of September 2026, Scalapay IP's merchant information sheet, which Bank of Italy transparency rules require it to publish, caps the fee at a variable 10% of the order value plus a fixed €1.00 per transaction. Your actual rates are set in your Activation Agreement. Paper reports cost €2 each, and electronic ones are free. Italian stamp duty is also charged: €16 once when you sign, and €2 in any month when your commission invoice exceeds €77.47. A Confcommercio Milano members' offer for 2026 mentions a €299 activation fee, waived for members, and says the variable fee depends on your turnover. The €299 fee does not appear in Scalapay's own information sheet, so ask whether it applies to you. The analyst firm Sacra estimates that merchant revenue was about 2.7% of Scalapay's transaction volume in 2024. That is an average across all merchants, not a quote.
