Durango Merchant Services

Payment Processor

Expert grade

Fact-checked June 4, 2026
Our verdict

Durango is a veteran, boutique high-risk payment processing specialist that serves as a trusted lifeline for businesses rejected by mainstream processors, but lacks enough reviews to make a confident assessment on the quality of the services.

Best for

High-risk merchants, such as supplement sellers, travel companies, fantasy sports operators, subscription businesses, FFL dealers, credit repair firms, and e-commerce sellers in regulated industries that have been rejected by Stripe, Square, PayPal, or Shopify Payments, and need a patient, knowledgeable broker to place them with a suitable acquiring bank. Also suited for international and multi-currency merchants in the US, Canada, EU, and UK.

Skip it if you

If you're a low risk business or have a low monthly volume (<$5K/month), are an adult content creator, or merchants looking for instant self-serve onboarding. If you are a high-risk business that requires an age-verification tool, you should consider PayKings as Durango does not support such a function.

Chapter 1

Should you choose Durango Merchant Services?

The headline take, the audiences it's right (and wrong) for, and the genuine differentiators behind the verdict.

TL;DR

Durango has a very low review count for how long its existed. It boasts a large range of services, but the company doesn't disclose any specific information about processing rates, most high-risk accounts are set up with a tiered pricing plan, which has lower transparency and higher overall costs. Additionally, the small team means that support availability during evenings, weekends, and holidays is handled by upstream processors and not by Durango directly.

On the positive side, even when other providers have previously denied a merchant multiple times, Durango can usually find a solution for almost any business type, US-based or international.

What makes them different

The genuine differentiator

Durango's broker model sets it apart from other ISOs who partner exclusively with a single third-party gateway, but there are a number of other ISOs out there who perform the same service, such as PayKings.

What surprised us

The biggest surprise is how small the company actually is — roughly 6–7 employees — yet it manages thousands of active merchant accounts. This creates excellent personalized service but also means any staff departure can materially affect your account management experience. Another surprise: Durango doesn't process your transactions. It places you with an acquiring bank from its network, and that bank is the entity holding your reserve funds, setting your funding schedule, and deciding whether to freeze your account if chargebacks spike. Durango can advocate on your behalf — and by all accounts it does — but it can't override the bank's risk decisions. Merchants expecting Durango itself to be their processor may be caught off guard when fund holds occur at the bank level.

How we got there

Delivering exceptional niche value, particularly for high-risk merchants who have been rejected elsewhere, backed by an exceptionally clean complaint record, strong industry reputation, and personalized service. Points are deducted for the lack of publicly disclosed pricing (which creates friction for buyers), reliance on tiered pricing for many accounts (less favorable than interchange-plus), reviews that vary widely depending on the source, and the structural limitation of being a small ISO (independent sales organization) rather than a direct processor. For a business in its niche, it performs near the top, but its transparency and pricing clarity still fall short of best-in-class.

Chapter 2

What it costs

Real-world cost at three volumes, plus the rates, fees, payouts, and contract terms that drive them.

Pricing schemes

2 pricing models offered. Pick the row that matches your eligibility — most merchants land on the first one by default.

Interchange-plus

Interchange-Plus

Availability: Pricing is custom based on industry, processing volume, chargeback history, average ticket size, and risk profile.

Pass-through cost (interchange) plus a published markup. Most cost-effective for higher volume merchants.

Final cost = card network interchange (passed through at cost) + the markup below.
Tiered

Tiered

Availability: Pricing is custom based on industry, processing volume, chargeback history, average ticket size, and risk profile.

Transactions categorized into qualified / mid-qual / non-qualified buckets. Often the priciest model in practice.

Payouts

Our take

The acquiring bank — not Durango — sets the funding schedule. Fund holds can occur at the bank level if chargebacks spike, and Durango can advocate but cannot override bank decisions.

Standard Payout Time

Typically 2–3 business days

Regular deposit schedule to your bank account

Expedited Payout Time

Not publicly offered as a standard product

Faster deposit option (may have additional fees)

Minimum Payout Amount

Not publicly disclosed

Minimum balance required before payout

Contract Terms

Our take

Durango Merchant Services offers month-to-month billing; however, the level of risk involved will always be the determining factor, so expect the possibility of long-term contracts of up to three years for businesses with higher risk.

Contract Length

Required commitment period

Varies on risk profile

Cancellation Process

How to terminate your account

No cancellation or early termination fees are standard, though contract terms are ultimately set by the acquiring bank and can vary.

Our take

The WooCommerce and Shopify integrations are heavily used and well-documented. The gateway emulator feature is a genuine standout — it lets merchants migrate from other gateways without rewriting their integration code.

Support & Contact

When something goes wrong

Durango's dedicated account manager model means problems are routed to someone who already knows your account. The limited complaints discovered mainly revolve around Durango's challenges in securing approvals for high-risk clients or instances where high-risk clients experienced fund withholding by the bank Durango partnered with — a common practice among high-risk merchant services providers.

Quality Assessment

Durango clients have access to a local, in-house customer support team. On weekends, support is handled by upstream processors. To help combat long wait times, clients are assigned an account manager to provide one-on-one support for the life of an account. The quality of support is the company's most consistently praised attribute — Durango handles the many complex questions and obstacles of high-risk account management with grace and a friendly, helpful attitude.

26 reviews

Reviewer Notes

Most of the reviews are positive with customers talking about their high approval rate and quick and reliable setup. There are a few 1 star reviews that come from very dissatisfied clients who claim that Durango Merchant Services was holding their funds. Durango denies responsibility for this, claiming that its the processing bank who is responsible for the negative situation.

Trustpilot

35 reviews

Reviewer Notes

Positive reviews emphasize that Durango assigns an agent to you, allowing the establishment of an ongoing relationship — enormously helpful because the individual communicating with you is familiar with your business history and background. Negative reviews largely come from merchants who were declined, with one reviewer upset that Durango did not accept their business due to insufficient volume or revenue.

The single employee review is too limited to draw meaningful conclusions, but the longevity of the reviewer (8+ years) and the 5-star rating are consistent with a stable, culture-positive small business environment.
